PRODUCTION
MY VIDEO LINK : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkLTPsh_OQ8
To start off with i wanted to get my interviews done , its a backbone to a documentary and i wanted build around it , at first i recorded a documentary with a guy called Jason , i wanted to use this as a mock to see what i could do , the background didn't need to have much purpose because its hard to find something which is related to politics , I thought that using a green background would be simple and basic.
However looking back at it i realised that the green background is quite annoying , i wanted to keep it simple and using green is not the color to use also i was not using the green screen in post-production , therefore it holds no purpose but a distraction to the audience.
Framing your camera shot can make or break your interview. If your shot is poorly done, distracting, or out of place, your audience i isn't going to care that your subject may have just said the most profound thing they’ve ever heard, they’re only going to care that there appears to be something in the background sticking up out of your subject’s head, or that the shot is so far away from your subject that they’re not even sure what they’re supposed to be focusing on.
So for my next interview i used a simple black background , its normal just like i wanted , I kept the same angle for the documentary which i think is important.
THE START OF THE EDIT
To start with i was struck on what to do with the introduction , i had it planned that i wanted to start with it playing a song and one of the interviewees talking about how they are not sure about what they know. And i felt like it didn't really have an introduction however going back to my research many documentaries do this technique , it's a way of drawing the audience in because they don't know what's going to happen next. The reason why i chose this song in the introduction is because it fitted perfectly with what i had in mind.
THE SONG I USED IN THE INTRODUCTION : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1nJ6GOT_Po
Within the start of the documentary i used a range of close ups whilst using DLSR , this was good for the introduction as it shows the audience that it is clearly aimed at teenagers , not only did the visuals represent this but also the voice over , it explains that we don't know much about politics.
After about approximately 25 seconds it cuts to a scene of someone searching up a various amount of questions regarding politics. i was going to originally put this after the title appears ( which appears after this scene ) however it match the flow that i wanted the documentary match. I screen recorded myself using a software called 'bandicam'. I thought this was a good idea to pretend to be a teenager for this scene as it shows to the audience questions the argument that i want to state whether teenagers care or not.
After the intro i instantly jumped into factual information , talking about whether we care or not and using a range of cutaways i had put together including a creation of a polling box.
creating little props like these add to the meaning of the documentary , adding boring visuals and no meaning towards the story line can make it dull. Hence why i created props.
Making sure i make this interesting for my target audience is important , teenagers don't want to see at 25 minute interview with Nigel Farage. So to step away from the generic boring politics taste i tried to stick with a 'edgy ' theme if you call it that. I wanted to educate the viewers but also make it interesting for them as well. To create a vintage like effect used in some of the scenes i filmed some politics videos on an old vintage tv screen by connecting a cable from the tv to the computer.
I DID NOT USE THE GREEN SCREEN AS I USED CLOSE UPS IN THE SAME RECORDING.
This can be seen in two occasions of the documentary.
Here it can be seen being used as a ' cross zoom ' , this can be used a nice transition therefore adding an element of flow to the documentary.
I also used some text i designed when i say a quote , i thought this would be a good idea as the viewers can read what i said , therefore indicating that it is an important part of the documentary. Linking to my research i watched a video on how to use nice font effects. By using the information i had gathered i was able to put together a moving font text. The way i did this is by n the first step create a new Black Video.
THE WAY TO DO THIS EFFECT :
In the Project panel click on the New Icon and then select Black Video.
Accept the defaults and click OK.
Inside the Project panel you will find the Black Video.
Drag it over to the timeline and put it on the second track.
And then select the Type tool and type the text.
And also for this one, make sure to center the text.
I would recommend to use a large or bold font.
I used the ' tahoma ' type font as i just wanted a plain font.
Next, make sure that the text layer covers the clip.
After that, go to the Effects panel and search for Track Matte Key.
You'll find it under Video Effects: Keying.
Apply this effect to the black video and then inside the Effects Control panel
select layer number 3 for the video matte.
And then hit the check box for reverse and you're done.
I struggled with finding a video in the background which wouldn't make the text unreadable , I then saw the clip i had used for filming the vintage tv and used that.
I then continue talking about information about politics and this is when you can see my first interview.
For my interview i used a visual to create a nice template for the questions i asked.
I managed to make the background myself by recording a nice lends flare effect , it's just a nice question background i thought i could use.
I needed to bear in mind how i was going to put together the interviews. First of all i cut each interview into the questions that i was going to ask. and when i re watched i realised is it really necessary that i have footage over the top of them ? I had used so much voice of god so far it would be nice to see some realism.
What i did do in the interviews was build a graphic that stated their name and where they study. I was really happy with this i have never built anything from scratch before.
As you can see , where i have highlighted is where i have included a range of effects such as ' continuous beizer ' to create this modern moving box.
I wanted to build effects like these because using stock footage is too easy , we only had 30 seconds available for stock footage so i needed to make sure i used it effectively , things like building graphics , I would want to do as not only is it helping me develop my creative knowledge but it also shows my creative possibilities.
I then added in more effects throughout the project and included two more questions. I used effects such as :
CONCLUSION
To conclude i think my production went really well. I was worried about how to start it off because this can really effect the flow of the project , however i personally believe that it had a nice flow and had structural and clear information. What i think i could do better is maybe sort out the audio in some areas , it may glitch because i had to cut some mis-spellt words out , to improve ,maybe i could say it more than once.

After this scene , this is where the main intro comes in. The reason why i am talking about the introduction so much is because it dictated the way my documentary took shape , i needed the documentary to start well so the audience are drawn in considering this is such a big argument. The transition between the introduction and the start of the documentary was good. I increased the music as the title ' do we care ? ' so it creates a range of emotions for the viewer and creates an impact.
